“The remarkable resilience of trees and humankind is a joyous reality. And today more than ever we need to be aware of these blessings and do everything in our power to protect both. The Family Tree is a celebration of life over adversity.” -Bridget Dumper
A tree in winter, bare of all its leaves bravely faces all the challenges of rain, cold, snow or storm. The tree will sway, and bend and lash around and finally tremble as the storm passes, but it survives. The idea of parallels between human beauty, survival and the same qualities that exist in trees really took hold and so the inspiration for the Family Tree was born. Bridget chose various gauges of galvanised wire and created thousands of solders and joints to portray the bare delicacy of the tree's skeleton, its branches in its winter form. To symbolise the adaptability, resilience and strength needed for survival she has designed the tree to sway and move with the gentlest touch from the viewer. This represents the wind or breeze and shows its delicacy and vulnerability. The stainless-steel base symbolises its stability and grounded qualities. The ‘family’ is contained within the branches and are also able to sway and move with a gentle touch or shake from the viewer.
