Hendrikka Waage, an Icelandic jewellery designer turned London-based painter, has had a dynamic journey marked by artistic evolution. After two decades of creating jewellery, she now produces captivating portraits in her “Wonderful Beings” series. These unique works, featuring ladies with a single ear, delve into the theme of selective listening in our information-saturated age.
The motif invites multiple interpretations, one of which is that, in today’s world of constant information flow, not everything requires our attention. The portraits celebrate women who have forged their own paths in life, choosing not to follow conventional wisdom. Ultimately, the motif is open-ended, offering limitless interpretations to each viewer.
Her work and style are deeply influenced by her travels and the countries she has lived in, including Japan, Russia, the USA, the UK, and Iceland. Each of these countries has a rich cultural tradition, which Hendrikka draws inspiration from in her art. She currently divides her time between London and Reykjavik.
